What is Reiki?
Energy healing has pretty much changed my entire life, so I wanted to give you the scoop on exactly what Reiki is and some of the benefits you can expect. Reiki is a huge part of my three month healing immersions and I also teach Reiki training courses, so if you've been wanting to delve a little deeper, keep reading.
What is Reiki exactly?
Reiki is a holistic healing modality that works on all four bodies (physical, emotional, mental, spiritual) as it kickstarts the body's ability to heal itself.
How did it start?
Reiki was developed in Japan in the early 20th century by Mikao Usui. In 1922, he went to Mount Kurama for a period of fasting and spiritual penance. At the end of the 21 days, he saw a great, pure light and and felt a deep sense of enlightenment. When he left the mountain, he injured himself and realised that he could heal himself by using his palms. He then tried this on other people and realised that he could use hands-on healing with them too. He opened a small clinic to treat people and to teach students to share the practice.
Reiki was brought to the West by Hawayo Takata. Takata visited Japan (it was said that she may have suffered from ill health and found Reiki after being told that there was an alternative way for her to find healing) and was a patient and a student of Chujiro Hayashi.
She later brought his teachings to America and the west and trained 22 Reiki masters before her death, who carried on her teachings which are known as the Western lineage of Reiki. There were 22 masters by this time who then spread Reiki through the West. All Reiki practitioners should be able to trace their lineage back to Mikao Usui.
How does Reiki work?
It's all energy and everything is connected. Reiki can be translated to spiritual energy or universal life force energy. This energy that connects us all and moves through everything, has been known about for thousands of years. It's also known as Prana, Chi/Qi, Spirit and Ki depending on the culture or belief system. When we experience blockages in the flow of this energy this can manifest in our bodies and have an impact on our overall health and wellbeing.
Reiki helps to balance this and raise these vibrations, giving the body a kickstart to heal itself. It allows the energy to flow easier through our chakras (energy centres) for optimal health. Once I connect to Reiki, this energy is then channelled through me and then out through my hands onto the client.
What happens during a Reiki session?
In private sessions, I connect to Reiki and place my hands either on or slightly off various parts of your head and body (while you are fully-clothed on the treatment bed). These positions are located around one of the chakras and I leave my hands there for a few minutes while the energy flows through from my hands to you. Reiki always goes where its needed on all four level of our bodies and doesn't have any contraindications. The effects of Reiki are deeply individual and everyone will have a different experience. I've had clients who have noticed that their physical pain has been reduced, some have felt a deep sense of calm and relaxation, felt an emotional release and received mental clarity or guidance. It's best to not have any expectations or hope to feel something in particular. Just trust in the process and that Reiki will help you as and where its needed.
Reiki can reduce symptoms and relieve pain by promoting the body's healing ability. It can also help to gain a sense of peace and calm, as well as relieving stress. You might feel a deepening of your intuition and gain some insight on areas in your life where you're facing blocks in. I've had clients who felt some of these benefits after one session, but it usually takes a few sessions to get things moving if you've not had any energy healing before.
